Although when it comes to wine investment it is usually either Bordeaux or Burgundy wines that attract the most investor attention, the upcoming Sothebys (NYSE:BID) April sale in Hong Kong will see clarets facing some Spanish competition with a fine wine selection from the legendary Vega Sicilia winery featured at the auction.
Stupendous Vega Sicilia Collection
On March 11, Sothebys announced that the highlights of its Hong Kong Spring Sale 2013 would include an impressive selection of 234 lots of wines direct from the legendary Spanish winery of Bodegas Vega Sicilia. In the auction houses press release, Serena Sutcliffe, International Head of Sothebys Wine, pointed out that it was a great privilege for Sothebys to bring to auction this stupendous collection of wines direct from Vega Sicilia, adding that the auction would present a unique opportunity for collectors to acquire decades of vintages.
As reported by the Decanter magazine, a vertical lot of 22 magnums of Vega Sicilia Unico, which comes from the personal collection of the winerys managing director Pablo Alvarez, is expected to bring HK$95,000-160,000 (8,240-13,878). In addition, a lot of Vega Sicilia Unico 1942 is estimated to sell for HK$80,000-120,000. The sale will also feature the winerys Reserva
Especial and Valbuena No 5 bottlings.
Sothebys Hong Kong Auctions
At Sothebys Hong Kong sales, the Vega Sicilia wines will compete for wine investment attention with some top clarets including Chateaux Petrus 1990, which is expected to go for HK$200,000- HK$280,000, and Chateaux Cheval Blanc 2000, priced between HK$120,000 and HK$200,000.
Wine with a Soul
As reported by Bloomberg, on February 25, Mr Alvarez showcased a rare tasting of Vega Sicilia wines to the media and buyers at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in New York. Mr Alvarez outlined the challenges associated with wine making, including sweltering-hot weather in the vineyards during the day, and near-freezing temperatures at night. Our entire philosophy is to make a wine of great elegance, he noted, as quoted by Bloomberg.
Vega Sicilia wines which have been produced in the Ribera del Duero region of northern Spain for almost 150 years are ranked by connoisseurs alongside Frances Premier Cru Bordeaux and are likely to receive significant wine investment attention at the upcoming Hong Kong auction. The Decanter magazine quoted Sothebys Ms Sutcliffe as describing Vega Sicilia as a wine with a soul which at the same time is a true reflection of its region, climate and the areas oenological traditions.
People want their money to work hard to deliver the best possible return on their stake. There are many ways that people can grow their money, from traditional savings and ISA accounts to more diverse investments such as commodities.
Current times are quite challenging in terms of what investments actually do provide a decent return on customers monies, and many people are turning to ethical investment opportunities.
What is an ethical investment?
An ethical (also known as Sustainable) investment is an investment that not only offers a good return on the clients money but also helps the planet. This is done by investing in commodities such as timber, where plantations are created and harvested over a designated period of time. These opportunities often come with social and environmental objectives. They can provide jobs to communities whilst creating sustainable fuels and forestry for years to come.
Why should you chose an ethical investment?
Investing money is all about getting a return at any cost. Ethical opportunities are different in that respect. Ultimately the end goal is getting a return on investment, but alongside this investment you know that the money is being put to good use in both a socially and environmentally responsible way. By choosing an ethical investment you can be sure that your money will be put to use in a way that will also help the environment both now and the foreseeable future.
What are the risk of ethical investments?
There are always risks in any investment and ethical opportunities are no different, however they do tend to often perform well under poor market conditions. It is important to note, however, that an ethical opportunity might have a higher risk profile than other investment opportunities where a companies activities are more mainstream.
What types of ethical investments are available?
There are many different types of sustainable opportunities available to people who are serious about socially responsible investments. These can range from Forestry and Farming to alternative energy sources and eco-housing.
Before you embark on any type of investment, be it ethical or not, you should always seek guidance and where possible have a look at how the market has been performing over a period of time. Sustainable investments can offer a very high return on your investment, but as with any investment there is an element of risk involved. In some cases the element of risk may be higher in an ethical investment than in a non-ethical option so you should always research the market prior to departing with your hard earned cash. You should only ever invest what you can afford to potentially lose.
Sustainable investments can provide you with a high return on your money, whilst also helping to build a sustainable planet.
Buying gold is an investment strategy which, in this current bear market, is unlikely to fail to make a real return on your investment and safeguard your personal wealth against ever rising inflation, but perhaps the hottest gold investment strategy available to private and institutional investors is certified gold coins.
Certified gold coins as a gold investment strategy are pretty much the same as gold bullion bars with one exception; the rarity and scarcity value which is placed upon them because they are highly prized collectors items. It is the collectible value which tends to make them more expensive than bullion bars and harder to come by. A gold investment which comprises bullion bars and bullion coins is a wise investment, simply because the spread is wider and when it comes to selling and retrieving some of your gold investment and turning it into liquid assets it is sometimes easier to sell gold coins on the market because of their rarity and scarcity, and of course this can and does push the price over and above gold bullion bars.
Making a gold investment is something people have committed themselves to over the centuries and certainly there is documented evidence dating back some ten thousand years of gold ornaments and trinkets being gathered together as a safe haven for someones wealth and a protection against the then documented political unrest of the time.
The economy is in a precarious state which is reflected in the US dollars continuing devaluation and the gold bear market, which is now 12 years long and shows no sign of slowing. For investors in gold bullion products, just like in the distant past it is a safe and tangible asset to hold.
The modern era of gold investment and the free gold exchange began in the late dark days of 1974 when a little political skulduggery legalized the ownership of gold in private investors hands for the first time in well over four decades. Although it started with a trickle at first, the floodgates were well and truly opened, and by 1990 the entire gold and silver bullion and certified coin dealing business had become a bit of a feeding frenzy. Many investors got their fingers burned through lack of knowledge of this particular market and there were some really vicious sharks waiting to eat alive the unsuspecting punter and investor.
Fortunately all of that changed with the inception of the Certified Gold Exchange which from day one of trading earned and has kept a continuous A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, serving only to offer investors an honest and level platform for gold investment advice and a place where honest above board deals can be conducted.

Sweepstakes scams continue to rack up victims, despite warnings to the public. Often, senior citizens are the target of these types of scams. Thus, sweepstakes scams are a form of financial elder abuse. In a typical sweepstakes scam, a fraudster contacts an elderly victim and informs them that they have won lottery. The catch is that the elderly victim is then told that they must send in money in order to collect the sweepstakes prize. California financial elder abuse attorneys warn senior citizens not to fall victim to sweepstakes scams.
Recently, the Federal Trade Commission announced that it is putting an end to one large sweepstakes scam based in Ventura County. The defendant in the case owned three companies that allegedly mailed out more than 3.7 million letters to people in more than 156 countries. In this case, instead of asking for large sums of money from senior citizen victims, they asked for smaller sums of money. California financial elder abuse attorneys warn the public not to fall for sweepstakes scams no matter how much money the fraudsters ask for.
In this case, the senior citizen victims received personalized letters with official looking seals, stamps and bar codes. The seniors were told that they had won millions of dollars and could get the money by first sending in a small fee of $20-$30 within a limited period of time. According to the Federal Trade Commission, the scam has brought in more than $11 million dollars, mostly from senior citizens. California financial elder abuse attorneys say that senior citizens are often targeted for these kinds of mailings.
One of the letters that was mailed out as a part of this scam states that the victim has been chosen from a pool of 250,637 names. There is fine print on the back of the letter that states that consumers will actually only receive lists of sweepstakes they can enter instead of a cash prize. According to the Federal Trade Commission, the fine print does not clear the company of wrong doing because the claims are misleading and victims do not get what they are promised. Frequently, people do not see the fine print and send in the $20-$30 fee.
Sweepstakes scams such as this are widespread and one of the top five scams targeting consumers, according to the Federal Trade Commission. The fact that sweepstakes scams successfully target senior citizens makes them another form of financial elder abuse.

Loan modification option is chosen by a homeowner only when he is overstressed by the non-repayment of his home loan and frustrated from the frequent reminder calls of his lender. This leads to a fear about the uncertain future and the threat of foreclosure. All these things work together and people apply for a loan modification process as the last and only hope. This in fact was the previous thinking but today with the efforts of the present government, mortgage modification process has been simplified and made feasible for every citizen of America.
Today loan modification can solve all issues regarding late payments of the home loan or the danger of foreclosure and restructure your loan into payments that you can easily afford and this will actually put you back to life. You need to stay positive and look into this loan modification matter in a different way because now this is your right and there is nothing like mercy sort of thing involved here. You need to hold your head up and keep the optimistic result in mind because the whole process will take some time and you will have to work patiently throughout the entire process.
Applying for a loan modification process is a systematic procedure and you need to find out the requirements of your lender first. This will help you plan further and collect the documents and arrange them according to the sequence of requirement. The documents should be supportive to the declarations and statements that you make while filling up the application form. You are also required to fill the form properly and in fact you should double-check it very carefully before submitting it so that not a single point is missing or left out. There have been many rejections only because the application form was not duly filled.
Then there is hardship letter that needs to be written in which you have to give in details of your hardship that can be your job loss, illness, divorce, being overstressed due to loan repayments or any other one. The hardship letter has a big role to play in the approval of the loan modification as many lenders have made it the decisive criteria for this program. So you should write an impressive and motivating hardship letter that has the capability to earn the lender’s sympathy and make him feel that you are the most eligible candidate for loan modification program.
NFIB and WIA to Provide Better Protection for Wine Investors
Millions of Britons enjoy drinking it and many now see it as a long-term investment. Unfortunately, fine wine has also become a focus for fraudsters who trick investors into buying wines or vineyards that bear little resemblance to what they see in the prospectus, or may not even exist. The increasing number of such rorts in Britain has led to calls for action to be taken to protect investors and to increase consumer confidence in fine wines. In the upshot, the UKs National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) is joining forces with the newly-formed Wine Investment Association (WIA) to tackle the problem.
On 14 February 2013, the NFIB and the WIA jointly announced the launch of the new self-regulatory body which will aim to transform the growing wine investment industry by providing better protection for investors in the UK. The WIA has been formed by leading figures from the fine wine investment industry and seeks to support the sector’s growth through voluntary regulation, establishing best practices and setting up processes to identify fraudulent activity.
Director of the NFIB, Det. Supt. Dave Clark, said: “Fraudsters will always follow the money, wine investment is just the latest in a long line of investment opportunities that are being exploited and corrupted to the detriment of the industry as a whole. He added that the NFIB sees the creation of an auditable framework of self-regulation as a step towards maintaining and increasing consumer confidence, while also identifying investment companies which do not operate in accordance with the required high standards.
New Code to Tackle Wine Investment Frauds
Following an extensive consultation period, the WIA has set out the standards and procedures with which its members must comply to remain in good standing. Under the new code of conduct to be drawn up, wine investment firms will undergo stringent audits by accountancy firm Mazars. These will include checks on systems such as stock rotation and to make sure that purchase orders and invoices tally. The director of the WIA, Peter Shakeshaft, revealed that companies which successfully complete the independent audit process commissioned by the newly-formed regulatory body will bear a WIA logo offering consumers a trustworthy safety kitemark. Shakeshaft added: Our industry has been held back far too long by unscrupulous practitioners and issues around fraud. The WIA will really hold the industry to account.

You can find a great deal of information in the stock tables of your local newspaper, or your favorite financial industry publication. Those stock tables contain a wealth of information you can use to gauge the volatility of a stock market investment. Turn to the stock table in your favorite financial publication. Locate the 52-week high and low for each stock you plan to invest in.
Compare the 52-week high for the stock to the 52-week low. The difference between the 52-week high and the low is a good indicator of how volatile the stock has been over the last year, and how volatile it is likely to be in the future.
Contact the Company
Contact the investor relations department at each company and request a copy of the annual report. Some companies publish these reports online, so you might be able to find past annual reports on the company’s website. If not, check the website and find the contact information for the investor relations department.
Review the price history of the stock as shown in the annual report. A wide spread between the annual highs and lows for the stock is an indication of a highly volatile stock. A company whose share price has been more consistent has shown far less volatility.
Practice on Paper
Create a paper portfolio and track your stocks over a period of several months. List each stock on a separate line and list the daily or weekly price in each column. Tracking the stock price over time will give you a good indication of how volatile the stock is.
While nothing can totally eliminate the inherent volatility of investing in the stock market, there are a number of strategies you can use to reduce the risks of the stock market and increase your odds of finding a winning investment.
